A large part of this is due to my graduation from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University 1970-75) I have been a student of the liberal arts curriculum on the ground (Brown University), I believe that teaching should be a fusion of studies in art along with other areas of study. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist with a MA from 1967 and the Ph.D. at UCLA. My ethnomusicology degree, which was started at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is ideally located in an music department within a College of Letters and Science. It is fun to have many passions. It is also fun to see the big view. It is a great pleasure to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I am the writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. And I alternate periods when I focus on primarily teaching with periods when I add administrative tasks to my agenda (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group for Asian Studies Since 1999 and currently Chair of the Department of Music again).
